First Post! Forums' convincing, Concern on my art style, and Getting up & running

Posted by SerndestsArt - August 3rd, 2023

Nice to meet you. I just made my NewGrounds account!πŸ˜„ I have other socials for my art, but I didn't have an NG for the longest time. Even though I heard that people genuinely care about providing good critique, I think I was worried that NG wasn't that active.πŸ˜₯

In the end, I changed my mind about that. When I Googled if NewGrounds was worth it in terms of posting art, I ended up finding a couple of really helpful NG forums:

RE 1: Is it worth it to post pictures in Art on Newgrounds in 2023?: NG's straightforward, user-based way of pushing out artwork to more users.

RE 2: Is it worth it to post pictures in Art on Newgrounds in 2023?: More for general exposure & connections rather than professional exposure.

RE: Is Newgrounds a good place for casually posting art?: the art portal's purpose for complete pieces (but not for casual, likely sketchier art) & marking sketches as such.

My concern: trying to categorize my sketchier-styled illustrations into a sketch or a completed piece. I don't want to spend too much time on illustrations from cleaning up line artπŸ˜₯, since I want to focus more on storyboarding (which has slightly looser linework). That, and I personally like and lean a bit towards a sketchier drawing style.😊

Anyways I'll be getting this up and running by re-posting (from my other socials) my art to here. Later.πŸ‘‹πŸ™‚

Hi, welcome to Newgrounds :)
I think you got a pretty good idea of the site before jumping in. It's smaller than more well-known and mainstream platforms, but there's some really talented folks here you can connect with, and the community is great. I joined the site pretty late myself all things considered (even after the wave that followed the popularity of Friday Night Funkin'), but was made to feel very welcome here.

You also got the right idea about the art portal. When uploading a new piece you'll see a checkbox that asks if something is a sketch, if you check that box, it won't appear in the main art portal, but it'll still be in the feed of people who follow you. In that way categorizing your finished and unfinished work happens automatically. (If you upload too many sketches to the art portal, your access to it might get revoked). And yeah, you can also make your own thread on the Art Forum for all your drawings and sketches, if you prefer to keep things organised that way. So you have a couple of options here to show off/categorize your art.

Just had to stop by to tell you: your reply to my comment on one of your sketches is, so far, the most thorough & informative reply I have had the pleasure to read.

Tbh I didn't think my comment merited such an extensive...biography of sorts ("artobiography"? "Stylobiography", perhaps?) but if it does, great. Whenever I review someone's work, whether I'm being serious or not I always try to post something more than a generic comment like "this is great!" or "f***ing AWESOME", like so many people do...figure if the artist has made some effort in the piece, as you clearly do, then the review should have a little thought behind it.
